First of all, I’m stoked that the New York Times indexes and semantically parses Global Voices posts within their Topics pages!! Recognizing the importance of local perspectives in this age of journalism. My most recent piece, found in a popular Israeli online forum, describes a puzzling incident which could have dire consequences for Tzipi Livni’s group, along with Google Israel. A very popular blog post was excluded from the Google-Israel indexing and did not come up in search results. People on the forum claim the blog was blocked because it directly insulted Tzipi Livni’s political achievements. The blog is currently unblocked, but the discussion goes on.

Just finished watching the movie A Jihad for Love. One of the first of its kind – a documentary following the personal stories of Homosexuals in Muslim nations. A highly controversial film, highlighting these issues which most dare not talk about.

It is heartbreaking to see these people’s struggle between love for their religion vs. realizing their sexuality. At first fighting against their innate feelings, hoping that the “wrong” can be cured, seeking advice, even marrying – to eventually find out that there is no cure. One of the women interviewed in the film described her search for answers to figure out why she was different, and how she could change. She tried the IslamOnline web portal, where she got in touch with Imams and other priests who all suggested that she get married as a cure. Well, she did. And she also somehow managed to get a divorce and escape from her country years later.

A Persian man told his tale – arrested at a “gay” meetup, whipped and beaten, managed to flee to Turkey. He received refugee status from the UNHCR and a visa to Canada. He cries when he finally arrives in Canada – “How can I be free when so many others cannot?!”

What touched me most was seeing how devoted these people still are; after all they’ve been through. How they maintain such a strong connection with their god, even though they are afraid; afraid that they will be punished by god for their actions. The film also introduces the concept of Ijtihad, or independent reassuring. It is defined as the process of making a legal decision by independent interpretation of the legal sources, the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Conservative Muslims say that most Muslims do not have the training in legal sources to conduct ijtihad. They argue that this role was traditionally given to those who have studied for a number of years under a scholar. However, liberal movements within Islam generally argue that any Muslim can perform ijtihad, through which gay Muslims can justify their right for being both Homosexual and follow the Islam.

Tonight I feel thankful.
Thankful for living in a culture that will not stone me to death if I fall in love with a man.
Thankful to have the freedom and support to act according to my heart.
Thankful that the sky is piercing blue, for me.

Sharma refuses to associate homosexuality with shame, but recognizes the need to protect the safety and privacy of his sources, by filming them in silhouette or with their faces blurred. In one case, the family of an Afghan woman he interviewed “would undoubtedly kill her” if they found out she was lesbian. In another example, one of the associate producers, an Egyptian gay man, chose not to be listed in the credits for fear of possible consequences.
The film was banned from screening at the 2008 Singapore International Film Festival “in view of the sensitive nature of the subject that features Muslim homosexuals in various countries and their struggle to reconcile religion and their lifestyle,” Amy Chua, Singapore Board of Film Censors chairwoman was quoted as saying by The Straits Times.

The film’s director updates his daily blog with thoughts from his tour as well as comments he receives from fans of the film around the world.

I posted an article on the Global Voices Advocacy site, translating Israblog’s response to the agressive campaign against pro-ana blogs that has been taking place in the popular Hebrew portal. I’m happy with their decision against taking down these blogs, as with any form of censorship, the border between what is “kosher” and what is “harmful material for kids” is extremely fuzzy. They claim that ‘it is impossible to help someone with eating disorders by shutting her mouth’, and these blogs act as an only way to actually reach some of this troubled youth.

Instead of shutting down pro-ana blogs, they have concentrated on anti-ana blogs and increased advocacy and understanding. Israblog contacted a professional psychologist who now updates a blog on their site, answers questions and comments on people’s posts. They emphasize the importance of making a true connection with those that have eating disorders, rather than judging them, and leveraging their portal as a way to connect to these troubled youth, rather than trying to shut their mouth.

Finally, a fantastic example of online collaboration bridging between languages. While the People’s Literature Publishing House is translating the new Harry Potter novel over the course of two months (down from the three months it took for the fifth volume), Harry Potter fans have been collaborating on an online translation of the book from the moment it first came out, posting segments in forums and on message boards across the web. That translation is now complete. Shanghai Daily News noted in late July that Rowling’s lawyer “confirmed in an e-mail that non-commercial fan fictions including online translations are permitted.” The Chinese publisher, however, has a different view – it has not ruled out suing Baidu for hosting the translations on its BBS service, under the philosophy that even if fans can translate freely, hosting and transmitting such translations violates copyright. People’s Literature is afraid that once the translation begins circulating online, the pirates won’t be too far behind.

I’ve been reading and writing about this insane law proposal for internet censorship by the ultra-orthodox Israeli party shas which passed the initial voting stages in the Israeli knesset. The proposed law requires from the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block adult content-based sites (sexual, gambling and violence) from children. The ISPs will require some biometric means of identification for adults, in addition to a personal password, as a means to verify one’s age. The current law proposal does not state who claims which sites will be blocked, and technology will be used by the ISPs for this sort of identification. In one of their meetings, it was suggested that for an additional monthly fee, ISPs would offer their customers means to block “harmful” content, when and if requested. There are so many problems that come up. For instance, how and who decides which content is violent or sexual. How problematic it is if all the ISP’s in Israel hold a white list of every user’s personal information. If this content can be censored, what is the next stage? Perhaps blocking all sites that deal with evolution?I think it is clear to everyone that there is no way this law will actually pass in Israel. But it is super important to have clear and strong resistance. I also believe it is utterly important to explain why, and propose possible solutions => like media education for parents or suggesting to place computers in the living room of a home instead of a child’s private room.

Israel is a country surrounded by walls; physically and virtually – they are everywhere. But I strongly believe that walls do come down when people get together and discover their common grounds. Then it is possible to minimize the differences and appreciate a shared sense of community. The web gives us this ability to leap over walls, penetrate through political boundaries and connect as human beings. The tools we have in our hands carry the potential to empower people to choose to make a difference and not live with the silent acceptance anymore.

Everyone is extremely cynical in Israel because it helps when dealing with the hardships of daily life. In an excerpt from his recent post, Jonathan Klinger, spokesperson for the Israeli Bloggers Coalition against the Censorship Statute, explains why it even more important to help in this struggle:

During the last week we have been working intensively on arranging an opposition in the Parliament for the Statute by grouping Internet reporters, Legal Experts, Bloggers and Industry Leaders. However, the absence of an Israeli EFF is an obstacle. We do not have the financial backing to stop this, and we do not have sufficient influence on political decisionmakers.

I will follow up on the ways in which the community decides to battle against this statute. In the meanwhile, you can all start by digging his article.
